Will the Longhorn Network be in your house?
The brand-spanking-new University of Texas 24/7 television channel, the Longhorn Network, launches on August 26, 2011. Will you have it in your house? I am assuming everyone reading this will want it in their house, but will your cable/satellite provider carry it? So far no networks have agreed to carry it. Don’t panick. This is the usual game that cable systems play with networks. ESPN who bought the rights to the network from the University, negotiates with each cable and satellite provider individually. Currently, negotiations are ongoing, but ESPN is confident that all major cable providers in Texas will be carrying the channel by launch day.The Longhorn Network website provides a link for you to check coverage in your zip code and provider. Currently the results are all the same. None of the systems are officially carrying the channel yet. You can also send a request to carry the channel to your provider (AT&T U-Verse, Time Warner Cable, Grande Communications, Comcast) through the handy form. Online rumors would suggest that DirecTV and Dish Network will be the last to add the channel. This may mean if you are a satellite customer, you will be missing the home opener Texas vs. Rice on September 3rd. Of course, you’ll be at the Shotgun30 tailgate so you won’t miss a second. We’ll keep you posted as the systems announce their deals.
In the meantime, check out some of the newly announced programs you’ll get with your shiny new channel:
• “Longhorn Extra,” 10 p.m. weekdays: A daily look at news from all 20 of UT’s varsity teams.
• “Rewind with Mack Brown,” Mondays at 7 p.m.: Football coach Mack Brown’s post-game analysis from the Longhorns’ previous game.
• “Texas All Access,” Wednesdays at 8 p.m.: An inside look at Longhorns teams, with a focus exclusively on football in the fall.
• “Game Plan with Mack Brown,” Thursdays at 7 p.m.: Brown previews the upcoming weekend’s matchup.
• “Texas GameDay,” two hours prior to kickoff each Saturday: Modeled after ESPN’s “College GameDay” and originating from Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for home games and the network’s Austin studio for away games.
Now the only question is will you still make room on your DVR for Jersey Shore & The Real Housewives?
